Exploring more of St. Petersburg, Russia

The Canals of St. Petersburg

Exploring St. Petersburg by water.  Taking a small barge through the canals was a way to see the city from a different prospective. We passed beside great palaces, churches, museums and government building. Here is another view of the Church of Our Savior on Blood.

Very impressive. This looks like one of your better voyages.

I have always thought of Russia as being a very gray, dour country. From your photos, it appears to be quite colorful and decorative. Is this true of a few isolated historic buildings, or has Russia become a more vibrant, colorful country than the view of it during its old Soviet Union days? All we ever hear in the Western media is what an economic mess in which one finds the country. Even in the photo above, the side buildings along the canal appear to be clean and colorful, albeit nothing like the colors and decorative work on the squench domes of Our Church of Our Savior of Blood. How has the weather been for you this time of year as you travel?

      Jim,

The trip was the last two weeks of September so it was getting very cool and gray. St Petersburg has beautiful colors but that is not the case elsewhere. Moscow was very gray just like we remember from the old cold war days and the small towns along the way were very drab. Moscow has a great deal of new money but the the oil prices are effecting the economy across the board…50% of the budget comes for oil revenues and pensions safety net programs are being cut. Not good times in the Motherland.
